This course dives deep into the recognition and treatment of sepsis, including pediatric-specific considerations. Participants will explore what sepsis is, how it impacts the body, and the critical role of antibiotics. Through real-world case studies and interactive discussions, you'll learn how patient history can unlock key diagnostic clues—covering everything from recent travel and medications to exposures and underlying conditions. The class also examines common sepsis-related conditions like meningitis, cellulitis, C. diff, UTIs, puncture wounds, and infectious rashes, helping you sharpen your differential diagnosis skills in the field. 

Presented by:

  • Dr. Mano Patri, MD -  is a St. Louis Native who trained at Rush University Hospital in Chicago where she completed her residency in Internal Medicine and her Chief year along with her Infectious Diseases Fellowship and Chief year. She is a Board Certified physician who practiced 5 years in private practice before moving back to St. Louis where she currently is in private practice for Infectious Diseases. She is now an Infection Prevention Medical Director for SSM St. Joseph Lake St. Louis, Depaul Hospital and St. Louis University along with being a part of the SSM System Infectious Diseases team that works with system Antibiotic Stewardship, Infection Prevention team , Infectious Diseases physicians and the Microbiology division. She also serves as the Medical Director for the St. Charles County Department of Health.

    She is an active member of the Infectious Diseases Society of America and The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America. She is a mom of 3 humans and 1 dog and wife of 1 husband. 

  • Dr. Steven P. Laffey, MD - is a board-certified pediatrician and pediatric emergency medicine specialist with a longstanding commitment to excellence in pediatric care. He earned his medical degree from Saint Louis University School of Medicine and completed both his residency and fellowship training at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, where he continues to serve in multiple leadership roles.

    As Professor of Pediatrics and Director of Emergency Department Clinical Operations, Dr. Laffey plays a pivotal role in shaping clinical practice and advancing emergency care for children. He also serves as the Medical Director for the STARS (Special Needs Tracking and Awareness Response System) and PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) programs, reflecting his dedication to improving outcomes for critically ill and medically complex pediatric patients.

  • Dr. Rebecca Tracy, DO - Is an ABEM board certified Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medical Services Physician. She currently serves as the EMS Medical Director for SSM Health St. Louis EMS and practices clinically at SSM DePaul Hospital. Dr. Tracy completed her Emergency Medicine residency at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine and fellowship in Emergency Medical Services at Washington University in St. Louis. With a background in public health and previous leadership roles in both ground and air medical services, Dr. Tracy brings a broad perspective to prehospital care. She is passionate about advancing EMS through high-quality education, operational excellence, and medical oversight that supports both providers and patients in the field.
