After nearly a decade of anticipation, the DEA's final rule implementing the Protecting Patient Access to
Emergency Medications Act of 2017 (PPAEMA) was published in the
Federal Register on February 5, 2026, establishing a comprehensive regulatory framework for EMS agencies that handle controlled
substances. This session provides a practical, EMS-focused review of the new requirements, including
EMS agency registration, controlled substance storage and security, stationhouse and designated
location provisions, recordkeeping expectations, and administration of medications understanding and
verbal orders. Attendees will gain actionable insights to help their organizations achieve compliance
while maintaining timely patient access to critical emergency medications.
